Maths Curriculum Information

Introduction to Mathematics

At South Avenue Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality maths education which enables children to feel a sense of enjoyment, curiosity and achievement. We encourage children to reason mathematically to support them to successfully solve problems and challenges in everyday life.

In line with the current National Curriculum, we provide a maths curriculum which enables our pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

In order to follow and meet the National Curriculum requirements, we follow the scheme of work designed by the White Rose Maths Hub. This scheme of work focuses on a mastery approach and allows pupils to fully immerse themselves in their learning through a range of problem solving activities which will require them to broaden their mathematical understanding.

CurricuColour at South Avenue

This academic year, we have introduced a system called CurricuColour, that allows all pupils to become assessment proficient learners. Metacognition underpins our learning using CurricuColour across key stages in maths, giving children independence and ownership of their learning journey. In lessons, we provide opportunities for study but we strive to provide as many recall and application activities as possible to support the retention of knowledge and understanding, through the CurricuColour system.

Helping at home

We encourage parents to support their children in developing many skills particularly to support their fluency and mental ability.  This can be achieved in several different ways:

  • Counting basic objects within the home environment
  • Learning times tables
  • Using watches and clocks to tell the time at home
  • Using money in real life situations
  • Measuring and weighing using rulers and scales

Our Calculation Policy provides a guide on how we teach each strand of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for each year group, using real objects, drawings and more abstract ideas.
